The human organism contains about 2 g potassium per kilogram of body weight. 98% of this is located within the cells. The cell fluid serves as a solvent for enzymes and proteins. Potassium ensures a sufficient amount of fluid in the cells and is supported by sodium.
If the exchange of nutrients were to come to a standstill, more water would penetrate the cell and cause it to burst. Potassium maintains the osmotic pressure on the cell. A failure of the sodium-potassium pump would be the precursor to cell death.
Potassium is also irreplaceable in glucose metabolism. Potassium, supported by phosphorus, transports glucose to the brain cells. In contrast to all other cells, the brain cells (besides oxygen) only want to be supplied with glucose. For humans, the lack of glucose results in dizziness, lack of concentration and sudden tiredness.
Brain cells prefer glucose because this molecule can be quickly split and made available. In dangerous situations, the brain must be alert quickly in order to react correctly. It takes much more time until a fat molecule is burned and is available as cell food.
Potassium is also involved in protein metabolism and activates certain enzymes.
Potassium is mainly absorbed through the small intestine. In the body itself it is regulated by the hormones of the adrenal cortex. These ensure that about 95% of the potassium in food is excreted via the kidneys. The adrenal glands also play an important role in stress-related processes in the body. Under stress, they trigger increased hormone secretion, which in turn results in increased potassium excretion in the intestine.
It is dangerous to eat a diet that is not only low in nutrients but also rich in salt. The kidneys are constantly trying to excrete the excess of sodium from the body. However, since potassium excretion is linked to sodium excretion, this mineral is also lost.
Potassium for athletes
95% of potassium is excreted in the urine, the remaining percentage is mainly due to respiration and perspiration. Competitive athletes represent a special case. During exertion the body sweats extremely heavily and excretes many electrolytes, such as potassium, through sweat. For this reason, athletes must pay particular attention to a sufficient supply of potassium or minerals in general.
Danger from laxatives
With regular use of laxatives, extreme potassium losses occur. Without potassium and the other minerals, the intestines cannot be stimulated to work on their own again. This is because intestinal movement is also dependent on nerve stimulation and neuromuscular excitation. These in turn cannot be activated without sufficient potassium. The intestines become increasingly flabby, higher and higher doses of the laxative must be taken in order to achieve any effect at all. This leads to a vicious circle.
